Crystalis is probably my absolute favorite NES game. That's high praise considering the system boasts some of the greatest games of all time.
One day (I must have been about 10 years old) Mom came home with a game she saw on a discount rack. She had read the back of the box and thought it sounded like something I'd be interested in.
The game was Crystalis, and what a game it was! I had never heard of Crystalis up until this point, but after reading the box myself I was excited to play it. It was right up my alley: swords, magic, strange creatures, the four elements, and an interesting mix of mysticism and technology. As a kid I had a fascination with elemental themes like the weaknesses of enemies in Final Fantasy and themed weapons like in Mega Man, so the swords in Crystalis quickly became my new favorite fantasy weapons.
To this day Crystalis remains one of my favorite action RPGs of all time. It's unfortunate that it never recieved a sequel, but I have managed to find a few games that remind me of Crystalis.
